Falls Are Serious and Costly

• In the United States, about a quarter of adults older than 65 years old, report falling each year. 
• Each year 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Over 800,000 of these are hospitalized most often because of a head injury or hip fracture. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling. 
• It is hard to recover from a hip fracture and afterward many are not able to live independently. As the population gets older, the risk of fall injuries increase. 
• About $50 billion is spent each year on medical costs related to non-fatal fall injures.
